Origins of Family Names...

During the last decade of the 19th century Sarah, pregnant and abandoned by her husband Jacob, left her sons in Poland and arrived in England with her daughters. Subsequent family documents included the names ASCHANIL, ASCHEMIL and ASHMELE.  The family name ASHMELE is used by the family of Sarah's son John/Joseph who emigrated to England about 1900, and by the family of Sarah's youngest son Ernest/Aaron who emigrated to Canada in 1935. The name ASHMELE is also used by the family of Sarah's daughter, Rifka/Rebecca, which by a strange twist of fate was passed down the matriarchical line in Germany.  No document from Poland with the family name has been found todate.

The family name HERZFELD was used by Hyman/Chaim Herzfeld in Latvia at the end of the 19th century according to records held in the State Archives of Latvia, and also when he arrived in England with his wife and young family. The family name is believed to have been changed to HADFIELD when Hyman and members of his family later emigrated to USA.

The family name FREEDMAN was used by Nathan Freedman when he and his family left Poland and arrived in England at the end of the 19th century.. The family name was later changed slightly and deliberately to FREEMAN. No document from Poland with the family name has been found todate.

The family name FREIZEIT was used by Avraham Freizeit when he and his family lived in Augustow, and when they each left Poland for England at the end of the 19th century. The name was later anglecised by several members of the family to FRASER or FRAZER. No document from Poland with the family name has been found todate.
