Family Notes...Nathan and Freda Freedman.
Nathan Freedman (great-grandfather)... Nathan Freedman (Hebrew name Nissan ben Yacov) was probably born before 1850 and described as a tailor and "very poor". He and his wife Jessie-Freda lived in Augustow and had (at least) four children - Jacob (b.1871), Morris (b.1877), Israel (b.1882) and Hyman (b.1885). In the early 1890s Nathan emigrated to England, living at Great Garden Street in the East End of London with his family, where he worked as a Hebrew teacher. Two of Nathan’s sons each called their first-born son ‘Henry’. It is quite likely that they were both named for a relative who predeceased them, possibly an uncle, grandfather or great-grandfather whose name was Hirsch(-Zvi), Henoch, Enoch or similar. Nathan,
who was pre-deceased by his wife, died in November 1923; the cause of death was recorded by the Coroner for Eastern Distric of London as a fall in street, fractured femur, bronco pnuemonia.
He was buried at the Federation Cemetery, Montague Road, Edmonton in plot P28/14.
The inscription on the gravestone reads .. [Nisan Melamed ben Yaacov died 3 Kislev 5684]
"In loving memory of Nissan Freedman who died 23th Nov 1923 age 70 (sic). Deeply mourned by his sorrowing sons, daughters-in-law, grand-children, great-grand-children, sister and relatives. God rest his dear soul.".
Letters of Administration were granted in 1924 to his son Jacob; the estate was valued at £249/11/8. Jessie (great-grandmother)... Jessie Freda (surname unknown) was probably born in Poland before 1857 and married to Nathan Freedman. They had (at least) four children - Jacob (b.1871), Morris (b.1877), Israel (b.1882) and Hyman (b.1885), and emigrated from England in 1892, living at Great Garden Street in the East End of London Jessie died in January 1917 age 66 (sic) at her home in Great Garden Street, London; the cause of death was recorded as chronic bronchitis by her daughter-in-law Annie. She was buried at the Federation Cemetery, Montague Road, Edmonton in plot I11/52. The inscription on the gravestone reads [Cheysha Freda bat Zelig] "In memory of Jessie, the beloved wife of Nissan Freedman, died January 13th 1917 age 78. Deeply mourned by her husband, children, relatives and friends. May her dear soul rest in peace".
Beila Freedman (great-aunt)... Beila Freedman, the sister of Nathan Freedman, was probably born in Poland before 1865. She was married to Ephram Cannon and had (at least) one child - Philip (b.1885 in Raigrod). Beila survived her husband and lived in North Kensington, and probably died after 1926; a death certificate for a Bessie Cannon (d.1929) is inconclusive
